Mary Chapin Carpenter
The country-folk tunesmith’s latest album, the April release “The Age of Miracles,” is another in the long line of finely crafted albums she’s released in the 23 years since her debut, “Hometown Girl.” Carpenter has sustained a level of quiet brilliance that seems so effortless yet gets overlooked all too often.

Corey Smith
Jefferson native and UGA grad Smith melds country, rock and blues and plays to packed houses across the Southeast. He gets the Bulldog faithful going with “Every Dawg” and keeps the spring-break spirit alive for the post-grad crowd with “If I Could Do It Again.” With Colt Ford.

The Omaha, Neb.-formed, reggae-tinged 311 returned last year with “Uplifter,” its first new album in four years. Like its two predecessors, it’s no match for the band’s 2001 high point, “From Chaos.” Even when the albums haven’t been up to par, these guys can knock it out of the park on stage, and their live show is likely to be as energetic as ever.

You might be surprised to learn that some of the best contemporary metal is being made by Georgia bands. To the list that includes Atlanta’s Mastodon and Savannah’s Baroness, add this Atlanta trio. Check out the monstrous, crushing riffs on the band’s new album, “Dog Magic.” It’s a frightening, brain-rattling ride that you want to take again and again — even if it hurts. With All the Saints and Wizard Smoke.

Counting Crows’ Traveling Medicine Show
Counting Crows made some undeniably catchy and classic records over the past 15 years, but the 1993 debut, “August and Everything After,” is still the band’s high-water mark. This tour melds Crows with San Diego band Augustana and reports from the early dates indicate that this isn’t an opener-headliner type deal. The bands will both be on stage together for most of the show, playing material from both bands’ catalogs. “This show starts at curtain and we’re all on stage right then, so you don’t want to not be there,” frontman Adam Duritz told the Windsor (Ontario) Star. “We all play together then we’ll drift and it turns into different people’s sets. Often it’ll be a Counting Crows set but people will be collaborating on it.”

Joan Armatrading
With her deep and resonant voice, Armatrading emerged in 1972 sounding like no one before. Though flying just below the mainstream radar, Armatrading is far more influential than her modest fame would indicate. Tracy Chapman, though certainly distinctive, is hard to imagine without Armatrading paving the way. And her musical blend should find favor with any Indigo Girls fan. The St. Kitts-born singer-songwriter peppers her folk-based tunes with rock, R&B, reggae and any other genre that strikes her fancy.

Smokey Robinson
The dulcet pipes may have aged a bit, but there’s no denying his repertoire of classic tunes. And despite all the cover versions those songs have survived, no one does them better. The Motown great’s 37 Billboard hits range from ’60s gems “Tears of a Clown” and “I Second That Emotion” to 1979’s “Cruisin’.”
