Relient K, Derek Webb
Some of the sweetest melodies that have ever flowed from the pop-punk fountain can be found on Relient K’s albums. The quintet’s new one, “Forget and Not Slow Down,” was released earlier this week and it might be among their best. And it’s one of the most optimistic break-up albums you’ll ever hear. As frontman Matt Theissen sings on the title track, “I’d rather forget and not slow down than gather regret for the things I can’t change now.” Nashville-based singer-songwriter Webb might be better known for his role as frontman for Christian rock outfit Caedmon’s Call, but his solo work is outstanding. Check out the Beatlesque power pop of “The Ringing Bell” or the Radiohead-like touches he added to the controversial “Stockholm Syndrome.”

Green Day
More than a decade after taking punk into the mainstream, Green Day scored a Grammy for best rock album with 2005’s “American Idiot.” It became the band’s biggest success since its 1994 breakout “Dookie,” which sold more than 10 million copies. The trio followed that Grammy winner with 2009’s similarly ambitious “21st Century Breakdown,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers; Crosby, Stills and Nash
Petty transcends generational divides. In 2008, for example, the youngsters in Vampire Weekend played a cover of Petty’s “Don’t Come Around Here No More” at a free gig in New York’s Central Park (check it out on YouTube). In introducing the song, frontman Ezra Koenig called Petty “probably the greatest human being that ever came out of Gainesville, Fla.” As for Petty, he recently released his first new album with the Heartbreakers since 2002’s “The Last DJ.” “Mojo,” which hit stores in June, is another in a long line of quality albums (Petty’s 16th, including three solo releases). Now he’s back on the road with his trusty and talented band. Crosby, Stills and Nash helped bring harmony to the forefront of popular music with the vocal blend on their 1969 debut album. The trio’s name is so familiar, yet many of the fans they’ve gathered along the way probably don’t remember that each member was in a successful band before. Crosby came from the Byrds, Stills was in Buffalo Springfield (with sometime Y in CSNY Neil Young) and Nash was one of the Hollies.

Arcade Fire, Spoon
Two of indie rock’s most critically revered bands are moving up to the big venues. The ambitious sprawl of “The Suburbs,” Arcade Fire’s recent third album, is inspiring the kind of accolades that make it a shoo-in for many year-end Top 10 lists.
