The Center for Pan Asian Community Services are hosting an upcoming community event on this Saturday and over hundreds people will be there and may help Dr Lin.  The samples of buccal swabs need to be picked up in real time.

What You Must Know Before Joining


    Today is a simple cheek swab; you are not donating your marrow stem cells today.

    Agree to give a blood sample for further testing if you ever come up as a possible match for a patient.

    Agree to donate for someone you do not know.

    Agree to do either donation process:

o    PBSC Donation – the donor’s blood is removed through a sterile needle placed in a vein in one arm and passed through an apheresis machine that filters off a small number of your blood stem cells.  The remaining blood is returned through a sterile needle into the other arm.  This is very similar to donating platelets or plasma.  You will receive injections of a drug to increase the number of blood forming cells in your bloodstream.

o    Marrow Donation – stems cells are collected using a special needle and are extracted from the hip bone and NOT the spine.  You are under anesthesia during this simple outpatient procedure.  The liquid marrow will replenish itself within a few weeks.  Most donors are back to their normal activity in a few days.

    If matched to a patient, agree to an average time commitment of 30 hours, spread out over a 4-6 week time span.

    You will be listed on the Registry until age 61.  

    Agree to update your contact information at BeTheMatch.org or                 1 (800) Marrow-2.

    You may receive a phone survey in 4-6 weeks

Vital Statistics
Every year, more than 10,000 men, women and children get life-threatening diseases such as
leukemia and lymphoma, and do not have a marrow donor in their family. To live, they need
to find an unrelated marrow donor whose tissue type matches their own. Patients are most
likely to match donors of their same race and ethnicity.
Be the one to give hope to patients in need.
There are simply not enough racially or ethnically diverse members on the National Marrow Donor
Program® (NMDP) Registry to meet the needs of patients. Currently only a little more than 1.8
million people of the nearly 7 million Registry members are of racial and ethnic diversity.
Getting patients to transplant quickly is often critical.
The NMDP is working to overcome barriers that slow this process. More donors of the same
race and ethnicity are needed to help patients find matches sooner. We are also working with
medical professionals and insurance companies to help every patient receive the transplant he
or she needs.
If more people joined the Registry, more patients would find a donor.
