I don't know much about it, but here are my preliminary thoughts:
I don't think affirmative action is a bad thing, and I think UC system should consider racial diversity.
I understand that Asian Americans are upset at this idea because it's already well documented that Asians have higher average test scores than almost every other demographic group. But I don't think the mere fact that they have higher test scores indicate they are harder-working or more intelligent. I find it more likely that Asians, especially those living in California, come from more educated backgrounds and from parents who value test-taking more seriously. Maybe it's even that Asians know they have to do well, so they spend more time on SAT prep. But I'm not convinced that SAT translates well to intelligence or promise.
Universities, especially public universities, have a duty to promote the social well-being of the country, even if it comes as a slight cost to the few (consider, for example, progressive income taxes). Improving the racial diversity of a university adds to the diversity of ideas and the diversity of backgrounds, enhancing a more positive outcome for all students.
---and I say this even as someone who is applying to law school and who knows that being a member of this minority group will hurt rather than help my application. |
