老车该换timing belt了，如何选择？

需要不需要一定按时间更换Timing Belt，要了解你的车是不是 Interference Engine。Honda的车绝大多数是 Interference Engine，Toyota 有一部分是。
由于没有及时更换Timing Belt所造成的后果不一样。对于非Interference Engine的车，皮带断了车会在路上突然死掉，无法开动，可叫拖车拖到车店修理，此时正是车店和拖车敲诈的好机会。
对于Interference Engine 的车，如果Timing Belt断了，除了与其他车一样的不便外， 很有可能造成气门或者活塞顶部损伤，修理工程会非常之大。所以，如果你的车是Interference Engine，还是最好按照厂商的要求，按时更换Timing Belt。也许你会看到换下来的皮带与新的没什么区别，但是，万一断了，你有可能要花大钱修发动机。这换正时皮带有点像买保险了。
现在的新车基本上都用Timing Chain，不用换，少了这个烦恼。

Based on my search, 2001, 2002, 2003 ES300 is NON-interference engine. So I will not change time belt and rent a car for a long distance drive after 150k.

The big issue, Interference Engines… If your timing belt breaks, the engine will continue to turn, but the camshaft stops. If any of the valves are open, and your engine is an interference engine, the piston will slam into the open valve and cause some real expensive damage. Most modern engines are built with very close tolerances, and to squeeze every last bit of power into a small package, engine manufacturers sometimes create issues with clearances. The easiest way to find out if your engine is an interference engine, is to look at the following guide published by Gates, a manufacturer of timing belts. They include the replacement interval and whether you engine is an interference engine or not.

Based on this, my 2002 Lewxus ES 300 DOES NOT have an interference engine - contrary to what has been said/claimed on various forums .
