More than 700 tennis players from around the state were in Macon this past weekend to compete in the USTA Adult League Tennis State Championships at the 2.5 and 3.5 levels.
Atlanta Foxdale Reserve shut down Atlanta Suwanee Station’s hopes of a state title in the 3.5 men’s division in Suwanee Station’s second straight championship appearance, winning three of the five matches contested.
Shanshuang Yang and Minghui Dai clinched the state title for Foxdale by defeating Naresh Shetty and Brian Kohrman 3-6, 7-6, 1-0.
“We were nervous,” Yang said. “We’ve been in similar situations, but not of this magnitude, and lost.”
The pair had never won a state tennis championship title before.
“We will be turning 50,” Dai said. “We won’t have a chance like this again.”
After trailing 4-2 in the second set, Yang and Dai changed strategy, a move that proved to be the turning point of the match. The team gained momentum, forcing a match tiebreak.
Neither player officially realized they held the team’s championship in their hands, but they both felt it.
“It made me more nervous,” Yang said.
Added Dai, “It made me want to fight.”
In the 3.5 women’s division, Atlanta’s Rivermoore Park beat Columbus’ CORTA-Alexis Miller 4-1 on Monday, finishing under a threat of rain.
Prior to the match, the tournament administrators told the women what would happen if rain did come.
“It put a lot of pressure on us,” said Jenny Coxwell, Rivermoore Park’s team captain. “They told us before we got on court that if rain halts the matches and you were up a break in the first set, you win. Or, if you were up a set, you win. You had to get ahead quick. Rain could ultimately dictate the state of the match.”
Cedartown’s What’s the Racquet? team won the 2.5 women’s division.
Other local teams who qualified included Macon-Branch and Warner Robins-Nichols in men’s 3.5, Macon-Hammock and Macon-Pam Collins in women’s 3.5, and Macon-Bateman in women’s 2.5.
Additional divisions will compete Friday-Monday in Rome and May 18-21 in Augusta.
